dc.description.abstract | Ferritin ana demir depolama proteinidir. | |
dc.description.abstract | Ferritin is the major cellular iron storage protein. It is found in high concentrations in tissues. In brain tissue, most of the non-heme iron is in the form of ferritin which is localized in astrocytes and microglia. The serum concentration of ferritin is directly proportional to tissue iron stores. It can be used to assess the amount of tissue iron stores in the absence of inflammation, cancer and infectious diseases. The only reason of low ferritin level is empty iron stores. In recent years several studies were carried out to establish a relationship between metabolism of iron , ferritin and stroke. In this study we wanted to determine whether admission serum ferritin level might help the clinician in estimating the clinical severity of stroke in addition to other clinical and laboratory parameters. We studied 68 patients with acute ischemic stroke admitted to department of neurology between January 2004 and June 2004. Serum ferritin levels were assayed at admission. Clinical status was determined by the Canadian Stroke Scale at admission. The serum ferritin levels of patient group was higher than that of control group. Serum ferritin level was found to be higher in patients with62greater artery occlusion and in patients with lower Canadian Stroke Scale. Serum ferritin level was correlated with neurologic deficit.Increased serum ferritin levels correlate to severity of stroke and size of lesion. Consequently, ferritin may be a new biochemical marker to estimate prognosis of stroke. But further studies are needed to clarify the role of ferritin in cerebrovascular disease. | en_US |
