Y Manipulative modalities are considered to be effective in the management of mechanical low back pain by relaxing the reflex muscular spasm and restoring the relationships in anatomical structures. In this study 3 different manipulative procedures were applied in randomly selected 20 patients (10 women, 10 men) with low back pain. Results were compared with those in control group treated by physical therapy modalities. Apart from physical examination made before the therapy, immediately after the manipulation patients were reexamined. The techniques described by Dr.Cyriax were conducted in the manipulation group. Ten sessions of Infrared, Therapeutic ultrasound, Interferantial current and lumbar traction were applied on 20 patients in control group. The efficacy of the both therapeutic approaches has been assessed in terms of visual pain score, local tenderness, limitation in lumbar mobility, Schober Test, Straight Leg Raising and self-assessment of the patients. It has been found that recovery period is about 2 weeks in the manipulation group while it is about 3 weeks in control group. Tough manipulation seems more effective in relieving pain and spasm during first 2 weeks, there have been no difference between the 2 groups at the end of 3-week therapy period. In conclusion, we suggest that manipulation can be considered as an alternative procedure in well selected cases with mechanical low back pain provided that it is carried out by skillful and educated individuals. 46en_US
