I. SUMMARY A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF 4% HYDROQUINONE CREAM i AND 20% AZELAIC ACID CREAM TOPICAL TREATMENTS IN PATIENTS WITH MELASMA In this study, the efficacy of topically applied 4% hydroquinone and 20% azelaic acid creams, and the difference of clinical improvement scores was assessed in 40 patients with melasma by performing with Chi-square Test and Mann-Whitney U Test. Forty patients clinically diagnosed melasma were divided into two groups. One of them was treated with 4% hydroquinone cream and the other group was treated with 20% azelaic acid cream, topically. The difference of pigmentary intensity and reduction in size before and after treatment was found to be statistically significant in both groups (p < 0.05), but the difference of i clinical improvement scores between these two groups was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Due to the fact that 20% azelaic acid cream was as effective as 4% hidroquinone cream, and fewer cases had side effects, we concluded that 20% azelaic acid cream could be used more safely for the treatment of melasma. 36en_US
