Y EVALUATION OF BONE MINERAL DENSITY IN CHILDREN RECEIVING ANTIEPILEPTIC DRUGS We evaluated the effects of each of the valproic acid and carbamazepine monotherapies on bone mineral density in our study. Bone mineral density was measured in 53 children with primary epilepsy taking either valproic acid or carbamazepine for longer than one year and in control group (n=26) by `dual-energy X- ray absorptiometry` method at L2-L4 levels of lumbar vertebrae. The mean serum levels of valproic acid and carbamazepine were 66±2.2 j.g/ml and 7,0±9.3 jig/ml respectively, and the mean durations of therapies for each drug were 2.4±0.2 and 2.6±0.5 years, respectively. Calcium intakes in diet were similar in control and study groups. The serum levels of calcium and phosphor in all groups were normal. Although the serum alkaline phosphatase values between the study and control groups were not significantly different, 4 cases of the valproic acid group (16%) and 6 cases of carbamazepine group (21%) had higher alkaline phosphatase values. Bone mineral density values of both valproic acid and carbamazepine groups were not statistically different from that of control group. 22en_US
