dc.description.abstract- 87 - SUMMARY The aim of this thesis is to give an idea about the approximate incidence of paraproteinemias (multiple myeloma, Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia, plasma-cell myeloma and heavy chain disease) encountered in Turkey between the years of 1965 and 1980. The archives of medical clinics located in Istanbul were screened by us for the above purpose, whereas the clinics located-out of Istanbul requested to fill a form sent by us. The investigations were carried out with 31 cli nics and 44 colleagues. Internal medicine, hematology, immu nology, oncology, biophysics, radiotherapy, nephrology and pediatric clinics were primarily included in the study. No cases of paraproteinemias was found in the archives of pedi atric clinics. We have to admit that we received no answer from some Universities in Anatolia. The number of cases collected were 481. Of this 409 (% 85,03) were multiple myeloma, 37 (% 7,69) macroglobuline mia, 30 (% 6,23) plasma-cell myeloma and 5 (% 1,03) heavy chain disease. Most of the cases of paraproteinemias were found to be followed by the Medical Faculty of, Istanbul University. The mean ages in cases öf multiple /myeloma, macroglobu- l~inemia, plasma-cell myeloma and heavy chain disease were 54, 54, 4 9 and 35, respectively. ' -- 88 - The male female ratios in the above cases were as follow: Multiple myeloma 63,97 % / 36,03 % Macroglobulinemia 62,06 % / 37,94 % Plasma-cell myeloma 84,2 % / 15,8 % All the cases of heavy chain diseases were male. The signs, syn^toms and laboratory findings were in accordance with the medical literature. It was impossible to give a correct figure regarding the incidence of paraproteinemias in Turkey but was possible to state a figure for our clinical material. The incidence of paraproteinemias as compare to our hospitalised patients in the last 15 years was % 0,067. Keeping this and the above mentioned figure of 481 in mind we could state that as compare to Turkey's population the incidence of paraproteinemias per year is around 60 cases and this is not a low- percentage.
