T In most general terms risk can be defined as the probability of an undesirable event. When we imagine the organizational structure and the daily activities of The Gendarmerie, we can see many risky situations that gendarmerie personnel can confront. In these kind of situations, personnel will perceive the level of risk by the importance that would be attached by themselves. Following this process, personnel shows his or her attitude toward risky situations and it is determined by his or her risk propensity level. The locus of control which the present study tried to determine its effect on risk perception and risk propensity refers to an individual's perception of what are the main causes of events in life. Locus of control can be understood as bipolar construct, ranging from external causes to internal causes. Individuals that have external locus of control believe that his/her behavior is guided by fate, luck or other external circumstances but the ones who have internal locus of control believe that his/her behavior is guided by his/her personal decisions and efforts. Internal one is more desirable. Self esteem is about putting importance and value on ourselves. By this attribute we define our personal level of value among the people. As in the locus of control, this one has also bipolar construct. If individual appreciate himself as having low value and importance within society this represents low self esteem. On the contrary high self esteem relates to having and feeling of confidence and high personal value. In the present study, we tried to define risk perception and risk propensity differences between gendarmerie officers, non-commissioned officers, professional sergeants and cadets. Besides that we tried to determine the effect of locus of control and self esteem on risk perception and propensity. Therefore a booklet was prepared in order to get data about these components. The booklet consisted of six sections including demographic data, general risk perception questionnaire, operational risk IVperception questionnaire, impulsive sensation seeking questionnaire, self esteem and locus of control questionnaires. A total of 607 gendarmerie personnel and cadets were asked to fill out the questionnaires. It was found that generally, officers and N.C.O.s reported less risk perception than cadets. There were also risk perception and propensity differences between male and female N.C.O.s in the same way that has been found in some early researches. In domains that was found significant differences, females tended to perceive more risk than males. A strong relationship between age, locus of control, self esteem, risk perception and risk propensity was also found. Also age has a strong effect on theses topics. According to the results as individuals got older their risk perception levels decreased especially in military operational risk perception domain.
