The EU referendum: the discourses on immigration in the Brexit campaigns

Abstract

21. yüzyılın ilk çeyreğinde, Birleşik Krallık'ın Avrupa Birliği'nden ayrılma kararı, Avrupa kıtasındaki en dikkat çeken konulardan biri olmuştur. 2004 yılında Orta ve Doğu Avrupa ülkeleri AB üyesi olduğunda, diğer üye ülkeler, yeni katılan bu ülkelere geçici kısıtlamalar uygulamalarına rağmen, İngiltere bunu yapmamıştır. Ülkenin bu kararı, yeni üye ülkelerinden gelen büyük göç dalgasıyla karşı karşıya kalmasına sebep olmuş ve İngiliz halkının büyük çoğunluğu, göç konusunun ülkenin karşı karşıya kaldığı en önemli sorun olduğunu iddia etmiştir. İngiltere'deki 1975 referandumunda göç konusu ana odak olmamasına rağmen, 2000'lerin başından itibaren en merkezi sorun haline gelmiştir. In the first quarter of the 21st century, the decision of the United Kingdom to vote leave the European Union has been one of the most salient issues in the European continent. In 2004, when Central and Eastern European countries become the members of the European Union, even though other EU member states imposed temporary restrictions to these new members, the United Kingdom did not. This decision caused the country to face huge flow of immigrants coming from these countries and majority of British people claim that immigration has been the most important problem facing the country. Even though in the 1975 referendum in Britain the immigration issue had not been the main focus, it has become the most central issue since the beginning of the 2000s. Moreover, immigration has become the most prominent issue during the EU referendum campaign. Therefore, this thesis aims to present comprehensive analysis on how British political parties instrumentalize the immigration issue during their EU referendum campaigns.
