1893 Chicago Kolomb Dünya Sergisi`nde Osmanlı temsili

Abstract

Bu tezin amacı, 19 yüzyılın en kapsamlı uluslararası sergisi olan ve Chicago Dünya Fuarı (The Chicago World's Fair) olarak da bilinen 1893 Chicago Kolomb Dünya Sergisi'ndeki (The World's Columbian Exposition) Osmanlı temsilini dönemin sosyal, tarihsel, politik, sanatsal ve mimari koşulları çerçevesinde incelemektir. Sultan II. Abdülhamit döneminde gerçekleşen sergi katılımı, hazırlık aşamasından bitimine değin Osmanlı'nın imaj yönetimi açısından önem taşımaktadır. Sergi, Osmanlı'nın Batı algısına dair detayları barındırdığı gibi Batı'nın Doğu imgelemine ilişkin izler de taşımaktadır. Çalışmada, 19. yüzyılda Osmanlı katılımı ile gerçekleşen uluslararası sergilerle birlikte eğitim ve teknoloji temalarının ön plana çıktığı Kolomb Dünya Sergisi'ndeki Osmanlı katılımının hazırlık süreci, sergide yer alan yapılar, resmi ve bireysel Osmanlı katılımcıları ile yerli ve yabancı kaynakların konuyla ilgili değerlendirmelerine yer verilmektedir.

This rsearch aims to analyse the Ottoman representation at the most comprehensive international exhibition of the 19th Century, 1893 Chicago The World's Columbian Exposition (also known as The Chicago World's fair), within the context of the social, historical, political, artistic and architectural circumstances of the era. From the early preparatory stage up to the end of the exhibition, the participation holds significance in terms of image management in the Ottoman Empire, and accommodates elements of both the perception of the West by the Ottoman and the imagery of the East by the West simultaneously. This research investigates the preparatory stage; artefacts and structures displayed; official and independent individual participators; the commentaries on Ottoman participation at The World's Columbian Exposition, where education and technology themes were at the forefront, from internal and external resources; as well as other international fairs participated in the 19th century.
