dc.description.abstract52 ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to examine the education of mentally handicapped children in Turkish States schools between 1950-1997. The first chapter has focused on a description of both the concept of `mentally retardness` and `mentally handicapped child`. In other words, first the definition, the characteristic features, the types and the reasons of the mentally retardness is given. Then a description, the classification, and the characteristics of mentally handicapped children is made. In the second chapter, a discussion is been made on the importance of and the necessitiy for the education of mentally handicapped children. The third chapter is focused on the historical developments of education of mentally handicapped children both in western countries and in Türkiye. In the fourth chapter, the education of mentally handicapped children is discussed under the following headings: 1- Diagnose 2- Accomidate 3- Organization of the educational environment 4- Providing guidance services. In addition, an evaluation of the current educational programs of mentally handicapped children in Türkiye is been made. In the fifth chapter, the results and the recommendations are presented.en_US
