T MÎCRÖFTJNGI FLORA IN VAN (CITY CENTER) ATMOSPHERE AND SEASONAL DISTRIBUTION İMALI, Adem Ph.D. Thesis, Department of Biology Supervisor: Assist. Prof. Halil BIYIK January 2005, 65.pages In this study it has been aimed to search atmospheric fungi in Van city center and to determine their seasonal distribution. The study was carried out on samples of microfungi spores collected from Van atmosphere between 2000 and 2001. Samples were taken monthly from 10 different stations iri city center for 12 months. Petri plate method (petri plate gravitational method) was used in the study. Sterile rose-bengal streptomycin agar plates kept in determined stations for 15 minutes to expose atmosphere. Total 7446 microftmgi colonies were counted on 600 petri plates. At the end of the study total 57 species belong to 23 genera those are in Ascomycetes, Basidiomycetes, Saccharomycetes, Zygomycetes and Deuteromycetes classis were identified. 22 out of 57 species were isolated at the first time in outdoor atmosphere. Penicillium was dominant genus in all stations and seasons due to high count of colonies, 2312 cfu (31.05 %). But Acremonium butyri was the most abundant species owing to presence in all stations and seasons, and the count of colonies and persentage were 1521 and 20.43 % respectively. In addition, 9 species belonging to 7 different genera are new records for Turkey. These species are Arthrobotrys oligospora Fresenius, Aspergillus, caespitosus Raper & Thorn, Aspergillus crystallinus Kwon & Fennell, Aspegillus glaher Blaser, Fusarium melanochlorum (Casp.) Saccardo, Helicodendron paradoxum Peyronel, Minimedusa polyspora (Hötson) Weresub & LeClair, Mortierella kyalina (Harz) W. Gams ve Papulaspora irregularis Hotson. An important correlation (r=0.576*) was determined between microfungi spore number and wind (at 0.05 level) according to statistical analysis. Key words: Airborne fungi, urban atmosphere, new record, Van (Turkey). Ill
