At the end of 17th century and during 18th century, in order to train elite cadets who were also engineers several royal military schools of engineering have been established one after another. Nevertheless, it coincided with the same period that Ottomans were continuously defeated in several wars around the empire. Therefore, they have realized that they fell behind of the war technology of Western militaries. In order to catch up with their Western rivals, they have reformed their education system and they have established Western style military schools of engineering. Our main subject in this thesis is an Ottoman textbook which was in the curriculum in such military school (Mühendishâne-i Berr-i Hümayun) in 19th century. Although the author -who was also a chief instructor in the mentioned institute- Seyyid Ali Pasha (d. 1846) states in his preface of Conic Sections (Kutû'-ı Mahrûtiyât) that he used Western sources and Apollonius as a main source, it is obvious that he solely used Conics translations of scholars of medieval Islamic civilization. That was an odd scenario which contradicts with the main objectives of the institute's that he was serving. Furthermore, at the end he neither accomplished to translate Conics properly like his Islamic precessors nor could he prepare a proper pedagogical textbook like he was supposed to. As a consequence, he had been a victim of his own ideological intentions.en_US
