AND THE IN VITRO ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITIES OF THE ESSENTIAL OILS OF Thymus SPECIES IN BALIKESİR Hüseyin Alper İRTEM Balıkesir University, Institute of Science, Department of Biology (M. Sc. Thesis / Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Ayşe Dilek AZAZ) Balıkesir - Turkey, 2003 The genus Thymus (Lamiaceae) is represented in Turkey by 39 species (64 taxa), of which 24 are endemic. Essential oils extracted by hydrodistillation from the aereal parts of Thymus longicaulis subsp. chaubardii var. chaubardii (chemotype I and II), Thymus zygioides var. lycaonicus, Thymus pulvinatus, and Thymus longicaulis subsp. longicaulis var. subisophyllus collected from 3 different localities around Balıkesir were analyzed by GC and GC/MC. The main components of oils and their antibacterial and antifungal activities were determined. Thymol was the major component of Thymus longicaulis subsp. chaubardii var. chaubardii (chemotype I and II), and Thymus zygioides var. lycaonicus (56.6, 42.8, and 36.9 %, respectively). Carvacrol (60.0 %) and borneol (27.9 %) were found as the major constituents of Thymus longicaulis subsp. longicaulis var. subisophyllus and Thymus pulvinatus, respectively.
