An Althusserian study: Ideological State Apparatuses and George Orwell`s Nineteen Eighty-Four and Oya Baydar`s The General of the Garbage Dump

Abstract

Marksist bir düşünür olarak Althusser totaliter yönetim sistemlerinin sömürü düzenlerinin devamını toplum içinde kasıtlı olarak uygulanan devlet düzeneklerine bağlar ve bu aygıtları İdeoloji ve İdeolojik Devlet Düzenekleri notlarında ele alır. Althusser'e göre işçi sınıfının diğer sınıflara nazaran daha fazla çalışmalarına rağmen daha az ücret almaları ve çalışma durumlarına bir şekilde rıza gösterebilmeleri, yönetici güçlerin ideolojisinin topluma başarılı bir şekilde yansıtılabilinmesinin bir sonucudur. Ona göre, yönetici güçlerin ideolojisi ve topluma uyguladıkları toplumsal düzenekler bireylerin nasıl yaşamaları gerektiği üzerinde işaret edici ve belirleyici etkiye sahiptir. Aynı şekilde, George Orwell'in 1984 ve Oya Baydar'ın Çöplüğün Generali adlı karşı-ütopya romanları toplumların yöneticilerin mutlak gücü kontrolü altında yaşadıkları bir dünyayı betimlerler. Bu romanlarda, yönetici güçler toplumu mutlak kontrolü altına almakla kalmaz ayrıca bireylerin nasıl yaşamaları gerektiğini de belirler. Bu Yüksek Lisans tezi, Orwell ve Baydar'ın sözü geçen romanlarında betimledikleri toplumlarda bulunan devlet ve birey arasındaki bağı Althusser'in İdeolojik Devlet Düzenekleri notları dikkate alarak karşılaştırmayı amaçlar. As a Marxist thinker Althusser argues that totalitarian state systems sustain their course of exploitation in a society with the intentional execution of state apparatuses that he discusses in his notes named Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses. As Althusser argues the labor class works harder than any other social class status nevertheless they somehow consent earning fewer amounts of wages. He regards this consequence as an extension of the promotion of the ruling ideology. For him the ideology of the ruling power and the societal apparatuses are effective in defining and indicating the way people should behave. In the same manner, George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four and Oya Baydar's the General of the Garbage Dump are dystopian novels discussing societal norms in the absolute control of the state powers. In the novels, the state not only controls the citizens but also defines and determines the way individuals have to live. In this MA thesis the relationship between the man and state in respect to Althusser's Ideological State Apparatuses (ISAs) are compared and applied to the type of society that Orwell and Baydar depicted in their works.
