Psychological mechanisms of systematic othering in George Orwell`s 1984 and Bilge Karasu`s Night

Abstract

Bu tez İkinci Dünya Savaşı sonrası üretilen iki distopik romanı devletler eliyle yürütülen ötekileştirme psikolojisi ışığında incelemektedir. Romanlardaki ana karakterlerde yansımaları bulunan baskı ve politik şiddetin psikolojisi incelenirken, Carl Jung'un gölge arketipi ve Sigmund Freud'un kitle psikolojisi teorisi baz alınmaktadır. Bu bağlamda, Carl Jung'un gölge arketipi insanın işkence etme isteğinin altında yatan kötü yanını gösterir ve Sigmund Freud'un kitle psikolojisi insanın teslimiyet eğilimini irdelemektedir. 1984, büyük birader otoritesi altında devletin sistematikleşmiş ötekileştirme politikalarına maruz kalan ana karakter Winston Smith'i konu alan distopik politik bir romandır. Aynı şekilde, Gece devlet güçleri tarafından karşı karşıya bırakıldığı baskı ve yabancılaştırmadan dolayı mantığını yitiren adsız bir karakterin hikayesini anlatmaktadır. Bu ötekileştirilmiş insanların ortak özellikleri, onların otoriteler tarafından toplumdan izole edilmeyi `doğal olarak` hak eden marjinaller ve potansiyel suçlular olarak görülmeleridir. This thesis examines two dystopian works produced after the Second World War; Nineteen Eighty Four and Night in the scope of the psychology of othering which is carried out by the hands of states. Carl Jung's shadow archetype and Sigmund Freud's theory of mass psychology is taken into consideration while examining psychological reasons of repression and political violence, which are reflected in the psychology of the main characters in the novels. In this respect, Carl Jung's shadow archetype illustrates the evil, which lies behind man's will to torture and Sigmund Freud's mass psyche examines man's tendency to submission. Nineteen Eighty-Four is a political dystopian novel in which, the hero, Winston Smith is exposed to systematic othering policies of the state under the authority of Big Brother. Likewise, Night tells the story of a nameless character who loses his logic as he faces the repression and alienation caused by the state forces. These `othered` people's most common denominator is the fact that they are considered by the authorities to be marginals and potential criminals who `naturally` deserve to be isolated from the society.
