M ANTINUCLEAR ANTIBODY LEVELS IN OTITIS MEDIA WITHEFFUSION (OME) AND THE ROLE OF AUTOIMMUNITYAim: The purpose of this investigation is to determine the role of serum antinuclear antibodies in the pathogenesis of otitis media with effusion.Materials and Methods: This study was prospectively undertaken on twenty five patients with otitis media with effusion and twenty five healthy children. Antinuclear antibodies are investigated against rabbit tympanic bulla epitelium in sera of the patient and control group of patients with indirect immunoflouresence technique. Results: In patient group, positive reaction was noted in the sera of 28% (7/25) of patients. In control group positive reaction was seen only in 8% (2/25) of the group. The difference between patient group and the control group was statistically significant (p<0.05, Fisher's exact Test). Conclusion: This study showed that there were autoantibodies against rabbit tympanic bulla in the sera of at least 28% of patients with otitis media with effusion. The presence of antinuclear antibodies against rabbit tympanic bulla epitelium in the sera of the patients with OME supports the hypothesis that autoimmune etiology plays a role in the pathogenesis of OME. However, further studies are necessary to show the role autoimmunity in the etiology of OME.Key words: Antinuclear antibodies, autoimmunity, indirectimmunoflouresence technique.en_US
