We aimed to compare the potential difference of the serum levels of YKL-40, high sensitive protein C (HsCRP), vitamin D, soluble syndecan 1, neutrophil syndecan 1 between type 2 diabetes patients who develop microvascular complications such as retinopathy and nephropathy and patients who did not have any diabetic complications. Diabetic patients were further grouped as; retinopathic patients with differents stages such as nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (DRP), preproliferative DRP, proliferative DRP, diabetic nephropathy and diabetic patients without any complications. Serum YKL-40, HsCRP, 25 (OH) Vitamin D, soluble syndecan 1 and neutrophil syndecan 1 concentrations were evaluated as potential biomarkers to detect the microvascular complications of diabetes mellitus. The analysis were performed on ninety five type 2 diabetic patients from outpatient Clinic of Endocrinology and Metabolism of Celal Bayar University and 21 healthy volenteers. YKL-40, soluble syndecan 1 were analysed by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay method, 25 OH vitamin D by electrochemiluminescence method and neutrophil syndecan-1 was analysed by flowcytometric method.YKL-40 and HsCRP concentrations were found significantly increased in all diabetic patiients compared to the healthy controls. In addition, YKL-40 and HsCRP concentrations were found significantly elevated in the retinopathic and nephropathic diabetic patients compared to the complication free diabetic patients. Soluble syndecan 1 concentrations were found to be significantly elevated in diabetic patients with microvascular complications in comparison to diabetic patients without any complications. In conclusion, the results of the present study revealed that YKL-40 and soluble syndecan 1 biomarkers has the potential to differantiate the complicated and uncomplicated diabetic patients.en_US
