ERASMUS teaching staff mobility: From the perceptions of Turkish ELT academics

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı, Türk İngiliz Dili Eğitimi akademisyenlerinin ERASMUS personel ders verme hareketlilik programı hakkındaki algılarını incelemektir. Bu calışma, daha önceki calışmaların ışığında, Türk İngiliz Dili Eğitimi akademisyenlerinin ERASMUS personel ders verme hareketlilik programına ilişkin tercihlerini, bu programa katılmanın kendi kişisel gelişimlerine ve bağlı bulundukları kuruluşa yapacağı katkıları ve son olarak da program süresince yüzleştikleri zorlukları inceler. Bu calışma açıklayıcı ve tek seferlik durum çalışmasıdır. 17 gönüllü Türk İngiliz Dili Eğitimi akademisyen bu calışmaya katılımda bulunmuşlardır. Bu calışmada kullanılan veriler katılımcıların anket, mülakat ve yansıtıcı deneme yazmadan oluşan 3 aşamalı yaklaşımla elde edilmiştir. Çalışmanın sonucunda elde edilen bulgular, program boyunca yaşanılan bazı sorunlar haricinde, Türk İDE akademisyenlerinin Erasmus programını kişisel gelişimleri ve kendi kurumlarına katkıda bulunması gerekçesiyle yararlı bulduklarını ortaya koymuştur. The purpose of this study is to investigate the perceptions of the Turkish ELT academics about ERASMUS Teaching Staff Mobility Program. Under the light of former studies and literature, this study attempts to investigate the preferences of the ELT academics for participating in the ERASMUS teaching staff mobility, to examine the contribution of the enrollment in this program to their professional development and home institution, and finally, to learn about the problems they faced during the mobility period(s). The study was designed as an explanatory, single case study. A sample of seventeen voluntary Turkish ELT academics participated in this study. The data for this research were obtained through a triangulated approach, in which questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and reflective essays were administered to the participants. The findings of the study revealed that apart from some problems experienced during the program, the Turkish ELT academics preferred to participate in the ERASMUS teaching staff mobility due to its positive impact on their professional development and their home institution.
