dc.description.abstractvi SUMMARY We determined zinc, copper and magnesium levels in plasma from 39 patients with Type II Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and 50 healthy men by using Atomic Absorbtion Spectrophotometer. The concentrations of zinc, copper and magnesium in leucocytes and erythrocytes have also been measured after preparation as described by using modified Boyum's method. The mean plasma levels in controls are; Zn : X = 990 ± 162 /ig/l, Cu : X = 817 ± 134 jj.g/1, Mg : X = 21.24 ± 1.02 mg/1. The mean erythrocytes levels in controls are; Zn : X = 14.92 ± 2.85 ^ig/1010 cells, Cu : X = 0.933 ± 0.13 Hg/1010 cells, Mg : X = 53.88 ± 6.4 ig/1010 cells. The mean leucocytes levels in controls are; Zn : X = 87.46 + 33 jig/10 10 cells, Cu : X = 16.14 ± 7.1 ng/1010 cells, Mg : X = 397 ± 107 ng/1010 cells. The mean results of plasma in Type II Diabetes Mellitus patients are;vü Zn : X = 1072 ± 147 ^ıg/1, Cu : X = 1129 ± 109 ng/1, Mg : X = 20.346 ± 1.12 mg/1. The mean results of erythrocytes in Type II Diabetes Mellitus patients are; Zn : X = 14.96 ±4.1 ^ig/1010 cells, Cu : X = 0.539 ± 0.12 iig/1010 cells, Mg : X = 42.67 ± 5.4 ^ig/1010 cells. The mean results of leucocytes in Type II Diabetes Mellitus patients are; Zn : X = 84.05 ± 33 ng/1010 cells, Cu : X = 12.36 ± 5.6 ig/1010 cells, Mg : X = 352 ± 64 ng/1010 cells. By the statistical evaluation, zinc and copper concentrations are significantly higher (p>0.01 and p>0.0005 respectively) but magnesium concentrations are significantly lower (p>0.0005) and in erythrocytes zinc concentrations are insignificantly higher (p>0.4) but copper and magnesium concentrations are significantly lower (p>0.0005) and finally in leucocytes zinc concentrations are insignificantly lower (p<0.4) but copper and magnesium concentrations are significantly lower (p<0.0005 and p<0.025 respectively) in plasma from Type II Diabetes Mellitus patients than those in control groups. As a result, the variety between zinc, copper and magnesium levels in plasma leucocytes and erytrocytes might be significant due to clinical activity of Type II Diabetes mellitus patients. It has been suggested that erytrocyte and leucocyte element determinations should be performed together with plasma. In order to make a correct evaluation. Key Words : Diabetes Mellitus, Zinc, Copper, Magnesium.
