dc.description.abstractİNGİLİZCE fi.aSTB.AKT (en fazla 250 sözcük) In the present investigation, we tried to find out notu two contemporary writers, the French author ftom russian origin Henri Troyat and the Swiss author Jacques Chessex, dealt with the search after the own identity in their novels. We have observed that, both being still alive, there are not yet very much studies done on their epic work. In the case of Troyat, we did not include his writings' about famous Russian persona lities. Through the analysis of the `heroes` in the novels of both authors we established a way to compare their approach of the ego in investigating three main elements : loneliness, love and death. These items became also the three main parts of this study. The fact of feeling alone as well within the family as in the society leads to an egocentric behaviour in the main cha racters of both authors. This has been shown with examples from their novels -Troyat's `L'Araigne` and Chessex. `L ' Ogre` are representative for this attitude. Other characters try to find their way to their ego through love. Here a distinction has been made between lûve and its expression in the pleasure on the one hand and the relationship of love and jealousy on the other hand. Both authors and mainly Troyat have aJso shown how the ego can achieve himself in marriage and family life. Death has an important impact in human life and in most of Chessex1' novels and in many Troyat's novels suicide plays an important role in the identity crisis or the search after the authentic ego. Many examples from their novels have been dis cussed under this aspect. In the conclusion a systematical comparison of the approach of both authors has been made and although they have a very different biography and style, their vision of life and its problems shows amazing similarities.en_US
