Good and evil in the Lord of the Rings

Abstract

ÖZET The Lord of the Rings. Anglo Saxon dili üzerine çalışmalarıyla tanınan J.R.R. Tolkien'in en zekice yazılmış romanıdır. Tolkien, Lingustik bir yetenek olması yanı sıra, fantezi niteliğinde yarattığı ve çağdaş bir mitoloji olarak da nitelenen romanıyla son yüzyılın en çok beğenilen yazarlarından biridir. Bu tez yazarla ve romanla ilgili genel bir değerlendirme yapmakla birlikte esas olarak, Tolkien'in en çok önem verdiği konuların başında gelen, iyi ve kötü arasındaki hiç bitmeyen mücadeleyi nasıl ele aldığını incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Giriş kısmında genel olarak romanın teması, kısaca hikayesi anlatılmakta; almış olduğu olumlu ve olumsuz eleştiriler yardımıyla kısa bir değerlendirilmesi yapılmaktadır. II. Bölümde Tolkien'in 'iyi ve kötü' ile ilgili düşünceleri ele alınmakta ve bu temayı karakterleri, doğa ve dili ile nasıl yansıttığı anlatılmaktadır. Sonuç olarak Tolkien'in romanında işlediği tema ile gerçek dünyanın ve insanlığın temel sorunlarını yansıtmayı başarmış olduğu sonucuna varılmıştır.

ABSTRACT The Lord of the Rings is the most ingeniously constructed novel of Tolkien who was well known for his study on Anglo Saxon. Besides his being a linguistic talent, he is one of the writers who has been mostly admired for his novel which he created as a fantasy but also considered as a comtemporary mythology. This thesis evaluates the novel generally but primarily aims to evaluate how Tolkien handles the struggle between good and evil, the theme which he mostly signifies. In the Introduction part the theme of the novel is introduced, a brief summary of the story is given, and the novel is presented by the means of positive and negative criticisms. Second Part explains Tolkien's opinion about good and evil and indicates how he reflected this theme through his characters, nature and language. In Conclusion it's concluded that Tolkien has achieved to reflect the basic problems of the real world and the men through the theme of good and evil. v
