Abstract

80 SUMMARY In this study, we have tried to analize the industrial structure of Erzurum, because of its geographic, economic, cultural importance in the Eastern Anatolia. Our main purposes are to state the situation of industry in Erzurum, to bring the present problems of the industry out and to discuss how to contribute the increasing possibility of this sector to the development of the city. We came to the conclusion that the industrial sector in the region (in the 1 979-1986 period) has a share of 14.58 % in the GDP of the city. The industrial sector consists in large part of the consumption goods. The value added of the share of consumption goods in the manifacturing industry is 73 %. 97 % of the firms in the manifacturing industry are small scale while the others (3 %) are middle and big scale industries. There are a few public enterprises in addition to the private enterprises operating in the city. Most of the companies have been operating in the field of food, cement and mining. Totally 7352 emloyees work in the industrial sector that is the 3.45 % of total labor force. Industrial factors' productivity in Erzurum is very low compared to Turkey's average. The main reasons for this fact are the present problems of the industry and the external effects. These problems include as follows : The difficulties in climate condition, transportation difficulties, energy problems and the insufficiency of demand, capital, raw materials and the skilled labors. These problems have to be solved and industrialization in the area be seriously encouraged to make the industry as a leader sector in the development of the city.
