II ABSTRACT MASTER THESIS Illuminated handicraft books in the Library of Atatürk university OKTAY HATIPOGLU Supervisor : Assoc Yr&Doç. ömür KOÇ 1997, Page : Jury : Assoc Yr&Doç. ömür KOÇ The art of illumination which is one of the traditional Turkish handicraft is a book art whose roots goes to central Asia. This art which has been developer by Uyqurs has been able to reach Anatolia and gained its top value in Ottoman times. The art of illumination which had been on the top in classical period in the 16 th century has begun to lose its effect with the period of westernization and later it has been tried to be turned to its old magnificient times by invidual effors. The art of illumination is mostly seen in written works. Among those, the most striking ones are the Korans. The written works which have reached our time are held in Libraries and musevms. One of thes Libraries is the Library of Atatürk Universty. Twenty- eight works between 15 th and 18 th century have been examined in the Library of Atatürk Universty. Generally these works are literary ones and can be devided as; the ones under the effect of westernization and the ones which reflect the classical art
