Abstract

ÖZET YÜKSEK LİSANS TEZİ GEORGE BERNARD SHAWUN İNGİLİZ TİYATROSUNDAKİ YERİ SEVİM İNAL DANIŞMAN: Yrd.Doç.Dr.Mehmet TAKKAÇ 1998, Sayfa: 64 JÜRİ: Yrd.Doç.Dr.Mehmet TAKKAÇ Sanat, insanlara etrafındaki güzellik ve çirkinliklere bakmayı, bunları birbirinden ayırt etmeyi, insanlarla iletişim kurmayı öğreten bir eğitim aracı olmalıdır. İşte Shaw tüm yaşamı boyunca bunu yaparken, insana yabancı olmayan, onu hayallerle doldurmayan bir yaklaşım izlemiştir. Shaw'un, oyunlarında çizdiği ve gerçek hayatta savunduğu 'Yaşam Gücü` insanın içinde varolan ama gizli kalmış, bastırılmış kendini ispatlama, yenileme ve daha iyiye gidebilme ve duygularını açığa çıkarma amacı taşımaktadır. Bu amacı düşünce ve mizahla karışıktır. Bu düşünceler, insana hayattaki zorluklarla nasıl mücadele edileceği konusunda yol gösteren çok değerli bilgiler içerir. Bunu yaparken de mizahi bir yaklaşım sergiler. Onun mizahi yaklaşımı gerçeklikten ayrılmaz. Shaw, düşüncelerini yansıttığı tiyatro ile toplumun hemen her kesimini yönlendirmeyi hedefler. Onları doğrulara ikna edene kadar bu yönlendirme devam eder, çünkü o, yapı olarak doğuştan inatçıdır ve inandığı değerlerden hiçbir zaman ödün vermez. Shaw düşüncelerini yanısıtırken, kahramanlara psikolojik bir tartışma ortamı yaratır ve seyirciyi de bu tartışma ortamına çekerek onların da düşünmelerini sağlar. Kendi gerçeklerini toplumun beklentileri doğrultusunda kitlelere vermeye çalışır ve sonucu, onların beklentilerinin tersine bir şekilde bağlar. Böylece seyircinin ilgisini daima uyanık tutmayı hedefler.n Shaw kendi fikirlerini sahneye taşırken çağın en büyük yeniliğini yapmış oluyordu. İşlediği konular bakımından çağının Shakespeare'i diye adlandırabileceğimiz Shaw'un oyunları, daha sonraları da adapte edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Bu oyunlarda, insanların konumlarını belirlenmiş ve toplumsal aksaklıklar üzerine gerekli eleştiriler yapılmıştır. Shaw, insanlara, çevrelerine bakmayı öğretirken kadınlara ayrı bir önem verir. Onların saygın bir kimliğe ulaşmasında oyunlarını bir basamak olarak kullanır. O, hayatı tiyatro sahnesine taşımıştır. Tiyatroyu hayatın yorumlanmış şekli olarak karşımıza getirir. O güne kadar üzerinde durulmayan konulan ele alan yazar bu yönüyle kendi alanında bir öncüdür.

This is what George Bernard Shaw did throughout his life and while doing so he tried to cenvey something familiar to Men instead of filling the minds of his audience with fictitious or imaginary events. The authentic characters that Shaw selects from real life represent inner human emotions, feelings and perceptions and also reflect Man's aspirations to prove himself. These chracters aim to help man mature and be aware of the essence of life. The characters focus on their feelings in the plays in order to strengthen themselves. Shaw expounds his thoughts and combines them with his genius by the use of inversion and wit. He was intelligent and influential enough in his day to change both the minds of his readers and audience as well as the social strucure of society in which he lived. He put his ideas and beliefs into action on the stage to achieve change by peaceful means rather than by violent upheaval. These toughts and ideas show men how to overcome the difficulties of life and contain valuable insights into those difficulties. To do thisIV Shaw seems to offer only entertainment and wit. His sense of humour and fun are never divorced from each other entirely. Shaw makes his characters comtemplate and discuss the events of society by creating an atmosphere and of debate, causing a psychological conflict between the characters and audience. The characters and audince therefore think about the subject matter while at the same time the discussion is envilened with humorous elements. So while his plays are often entertaining, Shaw tries to educate and raise the awareness of the audience. While he is offering his version of truth to society, he also considers people's expectations. His plays often end in unexpected ways in order to attract attention and make the audience think. One of the Shaw's greatest innovations on the stage was to change the make-up of the cast of characters, instead of grouping them by class such as lord, prince, cook, servant, etc. He arranged them to give each equal signifance. While teaching people to look at their environment he also gave great importance to the role of women and tried to give them a more respectable identity, using his plays as a means to do this. He carried his life into the theatre and interpreted life on the stage. He handled subjects which had never been mentioned before and therefore can be considered a pioneer in his field.
