English teaching materials development and evaluation with references to high schools in Erzurum

Abstract

Dr. Avni GÖZÜTOK Bu arastama, Erzurum merkezde bulunan liselerdeki dil öğretim materyallerini araştırmayı, seçmeyi, geliştirmeyi, değerlendirmeyi, materyallerin kullanımındaki sorunları ortaya çıkarmayı ve çözümler sunmayı hedeflemektedir. Bu araştırma sadece İngilizce öğretim materyalleri ile sıralandırılmıştır. Araştırmada veri toplama kaynağı olarak hazırlık sınıfı ve lise I. sınıf öğrencileri ile İngilizce öğretmenleri seçilmiş ve uygulanan anketler incelenmiştir. Veriler uygulanan anketlerle toplanmıştır. Hipotezlerden çıkan sonuçlara göre İngilizce öğretmenlerinin % 18'i İngilizce öğretim materyalleri hakkında bilgiye sahip değildirler, % 38'in materyal kullanım konusunda bilgiye ihtiyaçları vardır. Erzurum'daki liselerin % 52'sinde materyal bulunmaktadır. İngilizce öğretmenlerinin % 88'i ders kitaplarını kendileri seçmektedirler. Materyal geliştirmede ve uyarlamada, öğretmenlerin % 40'ının konuşma, % 19'nun dinleme, %22'nin okuma, ve % 19'nun yazma derslerinde eksiklikleri görülmüştür. Süper ve Anadolu liselerinde İngilizce öğretmenlerinin % 88'i materyallerini kendileri seçmektedirler. İngilizce öğretmenlerinin %54'ü derslerinde hiç materyal kullanmamaktadırlar. Bunun yanında da % 17'si bir hafta içerisinde sıklıkla materyal kullanmaktadırlar. Test edilen altı hipoteze bağlı olarak araştırmada dil öğretim materyalleri hakkında genel bir bilgi ve istatistiksel işlemler ile ilgili sorunlar tespit edilmiş ve öneriler sunulmuştur. Ayrıca liselerde yabancı hocaya hiç rastlanmamıştır.

Further, the study identifies the problems and offers solutions on using materials at preparation and first classes of high schools in Erzurum. The research is limited to English teaching materials only. The subjects of the data were preparatory and first year students at high schools in Erzurum. Since, materials development is an important issue for teachers as well, they were also included in the study. Data was collected by questionnaires. After collecting, six hypotheses were tested. It emerged from the data that 18 % of EFL teachers do not know English language teaching materials at high schools in Erzurum. 38 % of EFL teachers need information on using materials. 52 % of high schools in Erzurum have teaching materials. Textbooks are chosen by 88 % of EFL teachers, 9 % of the Committee in Super and Anatolian high schools, and 3 % of the Ministry of Education. 40 % of EFL teachers in speaking, 19 % of them in listening, 22 % of EFL teachers in reading, and 19 % of them in writing skills lack materials adaptation or development. 17 % of EFL teachers often use materials a week, on the other hand, 54 % of them never use them a week. Results and implications proved that teachers do not use language teaching materials although they have materials in their schools. They have not any information of using materials, and they who enter the first classes are irrelevant to use materials. There are not any native speakers at high schools in Erzurum.
