Dr. Selahattin TOZLU Her şehrin tarihten gelen kendine has bir özelliği vardır. Bazı şehirler askerî, bazıları ticarî, bazıları da ilmi ve kültürel yönden önem arzetnıişlcrdir. Diğer yandan tarih boyunca askerî, ticarî, ilmî ve kültürel yönden önem arzetmiş şehirler de vardır. İşte bunlardan biri de Erzurum'dur. Bulunduğu mevki itibariyle Erzurum, askerî ve ticarî merkez olmuştur. Erzurum şehrinin bu özellikleri günümüzde de devam etmektedir. Yaptığımız bu çalışmanın amacı: Bulunduğu bölgedeki en mühim ilim ve kültür şehri olan Erzurum'un ilmi ve kültürel bakımdan bilinmeyen yönlerini ortaya çıkarmak, hakkındaki dağınık bilgileri bir araya toplamak ve böylece ilmi ve kültürel merkez olan Erzurum'un önemini ortaya koymaktır. 19. yüzyılda Erzurum'un ilmi muhiti, uç ana bölümde ele alınmıştır. Birinci Bölümde; Erzurum'un kuruluşundan XIX. yy. 'a kadar şehirde cereyan eden ilmî ve kültürel faaliyetlerle ilgili genel olarak bir bilgi verilmiştir. İkinci Bölümde; XIX. jüzyılda Erzurum'da klasik eğitim ele alınmıştır. Bu bölümde, Erzurum'da ilmi muhiti oluşturan cami, mescit ve medreselerle birlikte buralarda görev yapan ilmî, edebî ve tasavvufî şahsiyetler incelenmiştir. Üçüncü Bölümde ise; XIX. yüzyılda Erzurum'da modern eğitim ele alınmıştır. Bu bölümde Erzurum'daki modern okullar ile bu okullarda vazifeli olan hocalar ve okuttukları dersler incelenmiştir. Araştırma yapılırken sözü edilen dönemle ilgili arşiv kaynaklan, mezar kitabeleri, hatıralar, salnameler, mecmualar ve bilimsel eserlerden yararlanılmıştır. Erzurum'da ilmi muhiti oluşturan ilmi ve kültürel faaliyetler kronolojik bir sıraya göre verilmiştir.

Prof. Selahattin TOZLU Every city has a caracteristic which arises from its history. Some of them is important from the military and commercial point of wiev while some of them is important from the scientific and cultural point of wiev. On the other side, cities is important from the military, commercial, scientific and cultural point of wiev throught the history. One of these city is Erzurum. Owing to its locality, Erzurum is military and commercial center. These proporties of Erzurum continue to date too. The aim of this research is to bring out the unknown respect of Erzurum which is the most important city of the region from the scientific and cultural point of wiev; to collect the irregular information about thr city and to light the important role of the city which is scientific and cultural center. Scientific Environment in Erzurum in the nineteenth century is examined in three jftain parts. In the first part; it is informed about scientific and cultural works whic took place in Erzurum from its foundation to the nineteenth century. In the second part its dealed with classic educational Erzurum in nineteenth century. İn this part it is examined the mosques, the small mosques, and the libraries which constitute scientific environment in Erzurum. On the other side it is investigated the scientific personalities, litterateurs and mystical characters - which was on duty in these places - in third part it is dealed with modern education in Erzurum in nineteenth century. İn this part it is examined modern schools in Erzurum, teachers who is on duty in these schools and lectures which is taught in this schools. In this research, archive documents, memories, annuals, megasines, cpitaphes and scientific books interested that age are profited. Scientific and cultural works which fora scientific environment in Erzurum are give in choronological order.
