Errors committed by Turkish learners of English in oral production

Abstract

Bu araştırmada, İngilizce'yi ikinci dil olarak öğrenen Türk öğrencilerinin İngilizce konuşmada yapmış oldukları hatalar ve bu hataların nedenleri incelenmiştir. Bu hatalar belirlenirken Corder'ın (1971) metodu kullanılmıştır. Bu arada hata analiz prosedürleri de ayrıntılı olarak incelendi. Diğer taraftan konuşma ile ilgili yapılmış olan birkaç çalışmada burada belirtilmiştir. Data toplamak için öğrencilere bazı resimler gösterildi. Deneklerin seviyelerinin hatalar üzerine etkisi olup olmadığını görmek ve sınıf dışı etkenlerin öğrencilerin konuşmasını etkileyip etkilemediğini anlamak için de bir çoktan seçmeli test ve bir anket uygulandı. Deneysel çalışma yapıldıktan sonra, hatalara öğrencilerin ana dillerinin ve öğrencilerin yabancı dildeki yetersiz bilgilerinin neden olduğu görüldü. Ana araştırmada kullanılacak olan materyallerin değişmeye veya gelişmeye ihtiyaçları olup olmadıklarını belirlemek için ön bir çalışma yapıldı. İngilizce'yi ikinci dil olarak öğrenen öğrencilerin yapmış oldukları hatalar belirlenip nedenleri saptandıktan sonra, sonuçların ışığında bazı pedagojik tavsiyelerde bulunuldu. Özellikle ders esnasında yapılan konuşma hatalarının nasıl düzeltilmesine yönelik teknikler sunuldu.

In this study, the errors committed by Turkish Learners of English in oral production and the sources of these errors were studied. Corder's model (1971) was used to identify these errors. The procedures of error analysis were explained in details. Some studies related to speech production were also presented in this study. Some cartoons were given to the students and asked what they see on each cartoon. To see the effects of proficiency on the errors and to find out whether the extra input the subjects obtain from other sources affects their speech, the subjects were given a multiple-choice test and questionnaire. After the experimental study, it was found that the subjects made the errors due to their mother tongue and their inadequate knowledge they had about the taget language. In order to find out whether the materials used in the experimental study need revision and improvement, a pilot study was performed before the main study. Having identified the errors and investigated the sources of these errors made by Turkish Learners of English, some pedagogical implications were considered. Also, error correction techniques during the classroom activities were presented.
