D.H. Lawrence`ın oyunlarında işçi sınıfı ve sosyal çatışma

Abstract

Bu çalışmada, romanlarıyla tanınan D. H. Lawrence'ın A Collier's Friday Night, The Widowing of Mrs.Holroyd, The Daughter-in-Law ve Touch and Go adlı oyunlarında işçi sınıfı ve sosyal çatışma sorununu ele almaya çalıştık.Bu inceleme, iki ana bölümden ve sonuç bölümünden oluşmaktadır. Birinci Bölümde, 1832'de Sanayi Devrimi ile ortaya çıkan endüstrileşmenin sonuçları ve işçi sınıfının içinde bulunduğu şartlar ayrıntılı bir şekilde irdelenerek, endüstrileşme sonrası oluşan işçi ve burjuva sınıfları arasındaki çatışma değerlendirilmiştir. İkinci Bölüm, kısa bir tanıtım ve her biri bir oyun incelemesi olan dört alt başlıktan oluşmaktadır. Bu bölümün giriş kısmında oyunların kısa özetleri verildikten sonra sınıf çatışmasının en belirgin şekilde görüldüğü dört oyun analiz edilmektedir. Tezimizde ele alınan ilk oyun olan A Collier's Friday Night'ta, işçi sınıfının ekonomik şartları ve sınıf çatışması, oyundaki ailenin öyküsü incelenerek ortaya konulmaktadır. Holroyd ailesinin incelendiği The Widowing of Mrs. Holroyd adlı oyunda, işçi sınıfı yaşamı soyut ve somut kirlilikle ilişkilendirilerek eşler arasında kavgalara sebep olan sınıf çatışmasının oyunda nasıl sergilendiği ele alınır. The Daughter-in-Law adlı oyun ile farklı sosyal sınıflardan gelen iki insanın evliliğinin maddi değerlere göre nasıl şekillendiği gösterilir ve maddeciliğin hem işçi hem de burjuva sınıfında sosyal bir sorun haline geldiğinin altı çizilir. Touch and Go' da, sınıf çatışması sorununun işçi-patron ilişkisinde nasıl yansıtıldığı ortaya konarak, grupların birbirlerine karşı besledikleri düşmanlığın bireyleri insanlıktan çıkarma gibi büyük bir tehlikeyle karşı karşıya bıraktığı vurgulanır.Bu çalışmada, 20. yüzyılın ilk çeyreğinde işçi sınıfının yaşam koşullarına ayna tutan dört farklı oyunun incelemesi ile endüstrileşme sonrası İngiliz toplumunun karşı karşıya kaldığı sınıf çatışması sorununun tehlikeli boyutlara ulaşabileceğini, sanat kariyerine oyun yazarı olarak başlayan D.H. Lawrence'ın çok erken bir dönemde kapsamlı bir biçimde vurguladığı sonucuna varılmıştır.

This thesis is intended to examine in what way working-class people are pictured and how social stratification and conflict are reflected in D.H. Lawrence?s plays, namely A Collier?s Friday Night, The Widowing of Mrs.Holroyd, The Daughter-in-Law, and Touch and Go in particular.This study is made up of two main sections and a concluding chapter. In the first section, the class conflict between the proletariat and the bourgeois is examined on the basis of the background information related to English society in the 18th and 19th centuries. The second section consists of a brief introduction to the plays to be analyzed in conformity with the overall discussion of the thesis. Discussion in A Collier?s Friday Night revolves around the working class conditions and presents the issue of class conflict through a family relationship in which each of the members of the family is sharing different class values. The second play- The Widowing of Mrs. Holroyd examines the class struggle inherent in the personality of the married couple Mr. and Mrs. Holroyd by emphasizing the spiritual and physical ugliness permeating the lives of working class people and their environment. The Daughter-in-Law portrays the marriage of a couple coming from different class backgrounds shaped mostly by the material values. Aspiration towards upper class values and materialism are noted as a problem of the whole community, the poor and the rich alike. Touch and Go reveals the class conflict from the perspective of workers and bosses through an industrial action. The play draws the attention to the dehumanizing effects of industrial society both on the workers and the bosses.The study concludes that Lawrence?s dramatic works feature one of the first examples of the issue of class conflict resulting from the industrialization that reached at a threatening level at the beginning of the 20th century. It was only after the Second World War that dramatists returned to the extensive treatment of class conflict, initiated by Lawrence some fifty years ago.
