Y In the initial phase of this study, my original aim was to do a basically historical research on the economic development of Turkey in the 1945-60 period. I soon realised that in order to understand the dynamics of this period, I have to develop a theoretical framework by means of arguing against the two dominant approaches to the development prob lem, i.e. the modernization theory and 'five stages theory1 of the marxian thought. I developed the main concepts of my theoretical framework in the first part of my study and defined the main characht eristics of my model in the part called `the total model`. As I see it, the originality of the total model is this; in it I have tried to bring together the modes of production analysis and the world system approach in a dynamic totality. In the second part of my study, I have tried to re evaluate the economic history of Turkey in the light of my `total model` I couldn't start this re-evaluation by the year 1946 because in order to really understand that 14 year period after the second world war, I had to understand the pre-history of that period. I have started by the year 1923 and defined the basic characht eristics of the 1923-29, 1930- 39, 1940-45 period. After that `pre-history` I have started to analyse the 1946-60 period. I have argued that Turkey had the chance to continue the type of industrialisation that she had started in the 1930-39 period but that she had been convinced by the hegemonic state of the capitalist world system, the United States, to adopt a different kind of development system in the immediate aftermath of the war. I have analyzed what that development strategy, stressing agriculture and foreign trade, meant for Turkey and that how those seven years effected the economic development of Turkey- 265 - until the second half of 1970' s, I have then analyzed the reasons for ending that development strategy and for the beginning of the import-substituting development model. In the study I have made it clear that I have not been making a historical analysis. Historical studies have a special mode of discourse on their own, which I have not used in my study. I've only tried the usebility of the theoretical methot that I've developed in evaluating a certain period in the eceonomic history of Turkey. ft. ©. Kurula plantasyon Marka*en_US
