dc.description.abstracti 63 SUMMARY As is clear by its title `Discourse Analysiss A Critical Approach to the Newsmaking and Agenda-setting Functions o-f Newspapers`, this study is concerned with the problem o-f news production -from a critical perspective. It aims to represent and explicate the main arguments of the so-called critical paradigm on the problem o-f news production, where the technical aspects o-f signification and mediation in media messages is analized by utilising discourse analysis» The study consists o-f -five main parts. In the introduction and the second part o-f the study, a comparative history o-f the critical studies approach is presented. It is also shown that this history is not without contradictions as -far as the term 'to be critical-'' is concerned. The contradictions is tried to be managed by limiting the case to the 'Cultural Studies' tradition's conception o-f the 'critical', the roots o-f which can be grasped in its conception of the 'ideological'. Therefore in the remaining parts of the study, the argument is that media messages mediated through the realm of language and signification carries on an ideological character. In the third part, the theoretical hinterland is backboned to the field of 'news' and newsmaking and the forms of representation inscribed in the written materials -as 'bad news' of the complex historical social events- where the communication of events are considered 'structured'. The forms of inscription of events and their mediation through language precipitates the functions of news gathering within the realm of 'common sense'. I.t is in this sense this study presupposes169 the media are ideological» In the -fourth part, discourse analysis, a newly established empirical research discipline oriented to- the analysis of written materials as forms o-f `stating the obvious` within the significations systems is used to search -for the empirical trends resembling the mediational functionaries. In the fifth part, discourse analysis is employed to analyze an empirical data in the five Turkish newspaper concerning the ` forced exile o-f turks from Bulgaria* in the year 1989. The method of analysis and the rationale for utilizing the materials in a concurrent way is described in the appendix section followed with a glossary of the main concepts. T. C.
