dc.description.abstract215 SUMMARY The Ottoman towns have been choosed as topic to many social, cultural, economic and demographic research. Rese- arhers agree that the institution of /Rakff has an important role an the formation of towns and on the suppliying some necessities of society. Though the institution has been studied as theoretical or practial related to the whole are one by one of its units, it has not been made a biog raphic study related to physical, cultural, economic and demographic dimensions of towns, yet. In this study, the role of the vakf in the Ottoman pe- riat, in the recanstruction of Sivas which can survive up to now can be tried to explain. The physical reconstruction and settling of Sivas ' which began mostly at the loth century, have continued partly to the 19 tik century. The institution of vakf had also played the most important role in this formation, it had effected deeply economic, culturel, municipal servi ces, too. İn Sivas, one can see that in the 18th and 19th centuries, the institution of vakf has lost their old sup reme peculiarity with its all aspects like as ather Ottoman institutions. There are still traces of the vakf on physical appec- rence Of Sivas and many, foundation which serves in the so cial life of the city.en_US
