dc.description.abstract107 ANIMALS NAMED İN KUB xxxviii-Lvin AND IBoT IV In the field of Hittitology, the fauna of Anatolia during the Hittite period was studied as a whole for the first time by Prof.Dr. H. Ertem. There are no listings of fauna throughout the Hittite cuneiform texts Prof.Dr. H. Ertem has searched KUB i-xxxvn (1921-1953) and the other series of textes. W© have made a search on the twenty-one cuneiform volumes (KUB xxxviii-Lvin) which were published between 1965 and 1988 and IBoT IV published in 1988. We have also made use of the other materials which we have collected and the works and articles puhlished in the topic. During the Hittite period animal husbandry was one of the main elements that formed the Anatolian economic life. Especially the importance attached to stock-breeding can be seen evidently in the cuneiform sources that we looked through. At that time as now, animals were made use of in various manners. As we have seen in the cuneiform texts every animal was not only an sacrificial object but also was used for transportation, making of ornamental objects, medical treatment and to make leather and leather objects. We also observed that the animal shaped wares (BIBRU) were used for libation to the gods in the religious ceremonies. We also meet the names of animals in religious texts as well as the historical and legal texts, inventory-listings of cults and temples, soothsaying and some mythological texts. We have grouped the words concerning the fauna which are found in the above-mentioned volumes, in alphabetical order and under the following headings, I. Domestic animals108 II. Wild animals(II a-Wild animals interpreted, II b-Wild animals not interpreted), III. Birds(III a-Birds interpreted, III b-Birds in the soothsaying texts, III c-Birds not interpreted), IV. Insects. In addition to this we have tried to give the `words that have uncertain meanings in the context of animals` and `the new names that are found` in the course of the search as a separate group. Through this work we have tried to add some new information to the field by using the newly published cuneiform texts. We also tried to give meaning from the philological point of view to the unrelevant words that belonged to Hittite fauna. We can point out that there are some new fauna names among them.en_US
