dc.description.abstract303 İNGİLİZCE ÖZET (SUMMARY) In this thesis, it has been developed a critical analysis on the lexical structure of modern Turkish. The theoritical framework is based on the Lexicalist Hyphothesis which is placed in a paradigm, called Chomskyan Grammar, and which has some claims about the component of lexicon in that grammar. In the Chapter I, it has criticized the evaluation process of Chomskyan Grammar and its remarks on lexical structure. In the Chapter II, it has accepted that the lexical structure included four main processes: affixation, compounding, reduplication and lexicalization. The works of Turkish on every process has been criticized seperately. In general, it has been observed that lexical works formed a poor sample and ignored some areas, and so, this their character impoverished their conclusions. In the Chapter III, where a data-based discussion has taken place, first, the affixes of affixation process have been investigated, and some remarks on their semantics and their morphological orthography and phonology have been made. In addition to these works, a format for affixes inventory has been proposed. Second, the process of compounding has been observed with all aspects. In conclusion, the process of compounding has been considered to consist of tree processes which provide suitable descriptions for a generative grammar. Then, a format, in which the features of argument structure of verbs are coded, has been proposed for a kind of (verbal) compounds. In the Chapter IV, a sample which covers 15.000 derivative words, has been studied for affixation. Another sample with 5000 compounds taken from Turkish Dictionary has been studied as a data-base for the compounding. And 18 lists and 12 schemes have been prepared with the results of the previous chapter. Thus, data and quantative information have been planned to be used in further and much more detailed works.
