The Catalan Company, was a free company of mercenaries founded by Roger de Flor in the early 14th-century. In 1303 de Flor offered the services of his Company to the Byzantine emperor Andronicus II Palaeologus and his son the Basileus Michael IX Palaeologus. Roger de Flor campaigned with his Company in Anatolia against the Turks . The Byzantine Empire was under threat by the Turks who invaded Anatolia. He was married to the emperor's niece and was made grand duke (megas doux) and commander-in-chief of the army and the fleet. Roger was declared Caesar in April 1305, but shortly afterwards the young emperor Michael Palaeologus, not daring to attack the fierce and now augmented bands of adventurers, invited Roger to Adrianople, and there contrived his assassination and the massacre of his Catalan cavalry (30 April 1305) by his Alan troops. His death was avenged by his men in a fierce and prolonged war against the Byzantians.Ramón Muntaner was a Catalan soldier and writer who wrote the Crònica, a chronicle of his life, including his adventures as a commander in the Catalan Company. In this tesis we tried to gather information not only about the Crònica, but also about the history of Crown of Aragon and the situation of Catalans, Byzantine and Turks in Anatolia and Thrace in the early 14th-century.en_US
