dc.description.abstract52 SUMMARY Free radicals have a role in skin flap necrosis. The effect of various scaven gers of free radicals such as vitamin E, vitamin C, deferoxamine, and Ginkgo biloDa extract ( EGb 761) were investigated on caudally based dorsal rat flaps. Fifthy rats were divided in 5 groups of 10 animals each, one of which served as a control ( saline ) group. Treatment with daily given dose of vitamin C ( 340 mg/kg ), deferoxamine ( 150 nig/kg ), EGb 761 ( 100 mg/kg ) significantly decreased the flap necrosis surfa ce from control ( 8.76 cm2) to vitamin C ( 6.07 cm2 ), deferoxamine ( 3.38 cm2 ), and EGb 761 ( 2.99 cm2) respectively. Vitamin E treatment had no effect on skin flap sur vival. In this study, the results showed EGb 761 had the most beneficial effect on sal vaging distal flap necrosis. The future studies will be undertaken with these agents using different flap mo dels and animals.en_US
