T In this work, polymerization of bicyclo [2.2.1,] hepta~2, 5-diene (norbornadiene) by MoCl5 and MoCl5-C2H5AlCl2 catalyst system was studied and the effect of different reaction parameters such as temperature,, time, solvents and the catalyst composition on the polymer yield was inves tigated. The structure of the obtained polymers was determined by analysis of their physical and spectral properties (i.e. solubility; thermal stability, average molecular weight, x-ray diffraction, NMR and IR spectra). These findings were compared with the structure of the polymers obtained by radicalicf cationic, anionic and methatetic polymerization of norbornadiene. The structure of all polymers were similar and they contained repeating polynortricyclene unit except for the product of methatetic polymerization. The two double bonds of starting material were retained in this polymer. In the literature the polymerization of norbornadiene did not succeed in hydrocarbon solvents. In this study, however, up to 100 % polymer yield was obtained in benzene by optimizing the experimental conditions. Heretofore, unknown anionic polymerization of norbornadiene was accomplished with a 33% of product yield using n-butyl lithium as polymer initiator. iiien_US
