In this thesis, titled `Menzil Külliyes` constructed in the Ottoman Empire during The Sixteenth Century`, the social, economical, political structure of the century and their reflections on architecture are dealt with as a whole and it should be considered as a systematic study on which the emphesis is on architecture. In the 16 th century, starting from the capital city Istanbul, there was a road system towards Thrace and Anatolia with Right, Middle and Left Wings. In this study, We have preferred the Thrace Middle (İstanbul- Büyükçekmece-Silivri -Lüleburgay.-Babaeski -Havsa, Edime.... Beograd) and the Anatolian Right (İstanbul/Üsküdar-Gebze- İzmit- Yenişehir-Bozöyük-Eskişehir-Ilgın-Karapnar-Payas- Belen-Aleppo/Damascus Hidjaz) wings because the den sity of construction is higher alongside these roads com pared with the others. Related to the Derbend and the Menzil Institutions (Organizations) there were buildings alongside these roads which had been constructed by sultans, the grand viziers and viziers and they were managed by a foundation system. Our focus of interest in this study will be on these institutions, which have been called `The Menzil Külliyesi` The reason for choosing the 14 complexes for this study is that they exist within the Turkish borders and they are the examples which can bring the concept of `Külliyes` up-to-date. It is interesting that aport from reflecting the typical aspects of the political, socio economical, and military characteristics of the 16 th cen tury The Menzil Külliyes have a different quality in the Ottoman complex constructing in the aspect ofIV architecture. These kind of külliyes which have focused on commercial (caravanserai, bazaars) and civic (public hostels, public kitchens, public baths) facilities are more numerious in number and type than downtown külliye» and everyting here is erected according to the position of the bazaar (arasta). Acem Ali and Mimar Sinan, the chief architects of the period, together with 'The organization of Chief Architects` (Hassa Mimarlar Teşkilatı) have designed and constructed The Manzil Külliyesi- These complexes are good examples for the study of understanding the erection of the cities and they also help us to examine how the sta tions have become separate cities in the caurse of history.en_US
