Computer-mediated communication and community: A linguistic study on Turkish language used in internet relay chat (IRC) communication

Abstract

11 ÖZET Yüksek Lisans Tezi olarak yürütülen bu çalışma, genel olarak, 'Bilgisayar Aracılığı ile İletişim' i, ve bu tür bir iletişim sonucunda kendilerini, kullandıkları alan dil çeşidi (jargon) nedeniyle diğer gruplardan ayıran topluluğu, inceleme konusu olarak ele almaktadır. Konunun sınırlandırılması adına, oldukça kapsamlı bir kavram olan 'bilgisayar aracılığı ile iletişim' in (Computer-Mediated Communication /CMC) bir alt ünitesi olan 'İnternette Naklen Sohbet' (Internet Relay Chat /TRC) olarak bilinen bir sohbet kanalı seçilmiştir, ve bu kanal, internet yoluyla gerçekleştirilen ICQ, MUD, MOO,... vb. gibi sohbet kanalları ele alındığında, en fazla eş zamanlılık içeren, en akıcı, yani, konuşma (sohbet/chat) dilinin özelliklerini en çok yansıtan ortam olarak gözlenebilmektedir. Tamamı üç ana bölümden oluşan bu çalışma, ilk olarak konuyla ilgili bazı özel terimlerin tanımlandığı, çalışma alan ve amaçlarının belirlendiği, öne sürülen problem ve varsayımların ortaya konduğu, metod ve kısıtlamaların açıklandığı bir 'giriş' bölümüyle başlamaktadır. Konu ile ilgili gerekli alt yapıyı sağlamayı amaçlayan II. bölüm; iletişim, dil, sözlü ve yazılı dil alanları, teknoloji ve dil, internet, internet aracılığı ile iletişim gibi başlıklardan oluşmak üzere, bu alanda daha önce yürütülmüş dış kaynaklı çalışmalara, örneğin Reid (1991), December (1993), Peter (1998) ve bu çalışmalar sonucu ortaya atılan yargı ve görüşlere yer vermektedir. III. ve son bölümde ise, II. bölümde ele alınan araştırma ve çalışmaların ışığında, bilgisayar ve internet aracılığıyla gerçekleşen iletişimin (yine IRC başlığı altında sınırlandırılarak) iletişim anlayışında yeni bir boyut olarak kabul görüp göremeyeceğini, Türk dili üzerindeki sapmasal(deviational) etkilerini, Türk dili'nde de farklı bir teknik dil oluşumuna yönelik eğilimlerin söz konusu olup olmadığı gibiIll hipotezler; yazını, sözcük dağarcığı, söz dizimi, biçim gibi alanlar dahilinde, Türkçe olarak elde edilmiş olan veriler üzerinde değerlendirilerek incelenmiş, ve gözlenen bulgular örneklerle sunulmuştur.

IV ABSTRACT This study, which has been conducted for the Master's Thesis, generally analyses Computer-Mediated Communication, and the community that distinguishes itself from other groups because of their jargon as a matter of investigation. In order to restrict the subject, 'Internet Relay Chat/ (IRC)' has been chosen for analysis, which is a sub-unit of a more extensive term 'Computer-Mediated Communication. It is observable that, among some other chat channels such as ICQ, MUD, MOO, Internet Relay Chat (IRC) performs the most synchronous, fluent, simultaneous channel, that is to say, performs the most convenient environment in the Internet. This study, including entirely three main chapters, begins with an 'introduction' part in which, some specific terminology concerning the subject has been defined, the aim and framework of the study has been determined, the problems and assumptions that are put forward have been described, and finally, the method and the boundries have been stated. On the other hand, the second chapter of the study aiming at providing the related background for the subject includes the titles such as; Communication, Language, Spoken and Written media of language, Communication and Technology, Internet, Computer-Mediated Communication, and summarises some previous studies conducted abroad; Reid (1991), December (1993), Peter (1998), and states the opinions and conclusions resulting from these researches. Finally, the third chapter questions and analyses the Computer-Mediated Communication (by restricting to Internet Relay Chat) in terms of such assumptions that; whether CMC can be accepted as a new dimension in communication, whether CMC has certain deviational effects on Turkish language, whether in Turkish as well, there exist a kind of tendency towards the jargonic use of language, with the guidance of previously conducted outer studies mentioned in the second chapter. Inorder to specify these assumptions, the collected Turkish Internet Relay Chat data has been analysed and then evaluated in terms of linguistic fields of orthography, lexicon, syntax, typology, and the observed findings have been put forward and intensified with illustrative examples.
