Y MICROBIOLOGICAL AND HISTOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF EFFECT OF EXPERIMENTAL DIABETES ON RAT PERIODONTIUM In this study, microbiological and histopathological evaluation of periodontium in experimental diabetic rats were aimed. Total 43 Sparagua-Dawley rats in both experi mental and control groups were standardized in respect to their age, weight and sex. Experimental diabetes was in duced by injecting a single dose of 60mg/Kg Streptozotocin to rats. Identification of oral microflora was established by means of bacterial culture technique and microbical sam ples were obtained by using steril paper points. Alveolar bone loss was measured histometrically in the hematoxy lin- eosin stained tissue sections. Structure of gingival cap illary basement membrane was evaluated in PAS stained sections and additionally by electron microscopy. Animals in experimental group demostrated statistically significant weight loss at the end of the study (P<0.001). While sus pected periodontopathogen bacteria such as Porphyromo- nas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, Actinobacillus actin- omycetemcomitans were frequently isolated from diabetic rats, these species were not harbored by control animals. Alveolar bone loss measurements mean values were close for both groups and there was no statistically significant difference between them (P>0.05). While structure of capil lary basement membrane was homogenous in control gin-36 gival tissue sections, it had irregular thickenings in the ex perimental group. Although suspected causitive conditions for periodontal tissue destruction, altered composition of oral microflora and thickened capillary basement mem brane, were occured at the end of the experimental study, alveolar bone loss was not different for diabetic rats.
