MâRT Hi t ti t e religion in general has been well treated by several eminent authorities. It ha» two dist inct aspects. She local cult» »each with its own tradi tions, and the State Religion of the King, based 01 the capital »Hattuşaş.The local cult s must go back into pre historic times, with little change over the centuries. The deity was the protector of the community, gran ting well being and prosperity in return for daily ser vice and attention. In speaking of the pantheon developed from heginnins into a highly complex system through an increasing tendency to gather in the local cults. This was a relationship of indi vidiuals, and for the kings in their judicial capacity it was axiomatic that to punish a citizen for a crime he had not committed was a gross injustice. Its most typical expression is seen in the later treaty lists, the lists of deities regularly invoked as witnesses when treaties were sworm with vassal kings and foreign powers and often summarized as the thousand gods of Hatti. In primitive religion tha god was god the community. The prayers have been translated many times- and have long since been exploited for the important contiibution they have made to the history of religion.en_US
