A study on error analysis in the use of collocations and idiomatic expressions in sentence translation from Turkish to English

Abstract

Bu tez, söz birliktelikleri ve deyimlerin Türkçe'den İngilizce'ye çevirisinde ortaya çıkan hatalara, yanlış çözümlemesi vurgulanarak dikkat çekme amacıyla hazırlanmış bir çalışmayı içermektedir. Genel olarak çalışmanın yoğunlaştığı temel amacı, söz birlikteliklerinin ve deyimlerin kullanımında sözcük seçimine ilişkin sorunları ortaya çıkarmak ve yanlış çözümlemesi doğrultusunda yanlışları gidermede kullanılan metodun ne derecede başarılı olduğunu görmektir. I. Bölümde tezde yer alan araştırmanın genel görünümünü verebilmek için bir giriş hazırlanmıştır. Bu doğrultuda konuyu özetleme niteliğindeki sorun, amaç, hipotez, metod ve sınırlamalarla bilgi verilmektedir. II. Bölüm konuyla ilgili literatür taraması ile ilgilidir. Bölüm, dil öğretiminde hataya bakış açısı üzerinde yoğunlaşmakta ve günümüze dek süregelen tüm bakış açılarını araştırmaktadır. Bu tam olarak çalışmanın, hataların giderilmesinde farklı yöntemler kullanan karşılaştırmalı çözümleme yöntemi ile karşılaştırılan yanlış çözümlemesinin özeti üzerinde yoğunlaşması anlamına gelmektedir. Ayrıca, `hata` kavramı iletişim açısından irdelenmektedir. Yapılan çalışmaya ek olarak önceden yazılmış kitaplar taranmıştır. III. Bölüm çevirinin dil öğretimi ve öğrenimindeki yerine ayrılmıştır. Söz bMikteliMerinin ve deyimlerin çevirisinde meydana gelen sorunsal yapıların daha ayrıntılı incelenebilmesi için çeviri teoremi ve metodları özetle göz önüne serilmiştir. IV. Bölümde söz birlikteliği kavramı çevirideki önemli yeri ve anlam ve kavram bağlamı sorunu ile ilintisi bakış açısıyla incelenmektedir. V. Bölüm, deyimsel ifade ile ne anlatılmak istendiği, dil sınıflarında deyimlerin öğretimi adına çeşitli alıştırmalar ve bu ifadelerin çevirisinde, çevirmene yüklenen muhtemel zorluklar üzerine okuyucunun bilgilendirilmesini amaçlamaktadır. VI. Bölüm konunun kanıtlanması için yürütülen çalışmanın öğelerini ve toplama sürecini açığa çıkarmaktadır. mVII. Bölümde deneklere uygulanan deneylerle ilgili bilgi ve bu deneylerden elde edilen sonuçlar sunulmuştur. VIII. Bölüm araştırma bulgularının özetini içermektedir ve ileride yapılabilecek bazı önemli pedagojik çalışmalarla birlikte çalışmayı sonuçlandırmaktadır. iv

This thesis covers a study carried out for the purpose of drawing attention to the errors that occur in the use of collocations and idioms in sentence translation from Turkish into English with a special emphasis on Error Analysis. Generally speaking, the main concern of the study is to find out the problematic points in word choice that occur in the use of collocations and idioms and to see to what extent the method applied to treat them is successful in the light of Error Analysis. In Chapter I, a preliminary is provided for giving a picture of the investigation involved in the thesis. In this respect, some information has been supplied within the sections of problem, purpose, hypothesis, methods and limitations that will outline the subject. The second chapter deals with the review of the literature related to the matter in question. The chapter brilliantly revolves around the attitude toward errors in language teaching and investigates the stages that the attitude has took till today. This exactly means that it focuses on the outlook of Error Analysis with a comparison of Contrastive Analysis Hypothesis which has different approaches to the treatment of errors. Furthermore, the concept `error` has been questioned in terms of communication. In addition to the work, previously written books have been reviewed. Chapter III is devoted to the role of translation in language teaching and learning. To examine the problematic points in the translation of collocations and idioms more closer, the translation theory and methods are depicted briefly. In Chapter IV, the term `collocation` is analyzed within the perspective of its crucial point in translation and of its relationship with the matter of meaning and sense relations. The fifth chapter aims at informing the reader on what is meant by an idiomatic expression, on various exercise types to teach idioms in language classes and on the possible hardships imposed on the translator in the translation of such expressions.Chapter VI reveals the elements of the studies carried out to prove the matter and the data collection procedure. In Chapter VII information on the experiments the subjects have been exposed to and the results obtained from the experiments have been provided. Chapter VIII concludes the study with the summary of the findings of the experiments and with some important pedagogical and future implications that have been supplied after the assessment of the study.
