The effect of teaching activities based on cooperative learning on the success of primary school students` learning English

Abstract

m ÖZET Bu araştırmanın amacı, işbirlikli öğrenmenin ilköğretim 5. sınıf öğrencilerinin İngilizce öğrenme erişilerine olan etkisini incelemektir. Ayrıca bu çalışma İngilizce öğretiminde kullanılan geleneksel öğretme metotları ve çağdaş öğretme metotları arasında bir karşılaştırma yapabilme olanağı sağlamaktadır. Araştırma deney ve kontrol olmak üzere iki grupta ve toplam 58 öğrenci üzerinde yürütülmüştür. Deney grubunda işbirlikli öğrenme tekniklerinden Öğrenci Takımları Basan Bölümleri (ÖTBB), kontrol grubunda ise geleneksel öğretme yöntemleri uygulanmıştır. Ders anlatımı Deney ve kontrol gruplarında araştırmacı tarafından yürütülmüştür. Her iki gruba da Ön test ve son test uygulanmış verilerin analizi t testi ne göre değerlendirilmiştir. Çalışmanın ilk bölümünde çalışmaya açıklık getirecek olan bu alanda yapılmış diğer çalışmalar, problemin sunumu, çalışmanın amacı ve konusu, çalışmada kullanılan yöntem ve sınırlılıklar belirtilmiştir. Bir sonraki bölüm, öğrenme ve öğretme ile ilgili genel kavramların tanıtılmasını, geleneksel ve çağdaş öğretme metotlarının sunulmasını kapsar. Bunun yanında yine bu bölümde işbirlikli öğrenmenin tanımı ve işbirlikli öğrenme modelleri, işbirlikli öğrenmede öğretmenin rolü, bu öğrenme çeşidinin faydaları ve işbirlikli okul konulan hakkında detaylı bilgi verilir. Üçüncü bölümde deneysel çalışma açıklanır ve sonuçlar tablo yorumlanyla birlikte verilir. Son olarak, sonuç kısmında özet, bulgular ve öneriler yer almaktadır.

11 ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of cooperative learning activities on primary school 5 grade students' achievement level in English lessons. The present study also provides an opportunity to compare traditional and contemporary teaching methods. The study has been conducted on two groups, experimental and control, including 58 students, in the experimental group the lesson is taught through the dynamics of STAD (Students Team Achievement Divisions) and the teacher has taught the unit using traditional teaching methods in control group. Teaching activities have been conducted by the researcher. Both of the groups have been pre tested and post tested at the end of the teaching period and the data has been analysed according to `t-test`. In the first chapter, the background to the study, the statement of the problem, goal and scope of the study method of the study and limitations are introduced. The next chapter includes definitions, which are related to teaching and learning, characteristics of traditional and contemporary methods, the importance of teaching English in elementary schools. Moreover cooperative learning is examined under the titles of; cooperative learning types, history and definition of cooperative learning, key elements of cooperative learning, teacher's role in cooperative learning, cooperative learning models, the advantages of cooperative learning and cooperative school. In the third chapter, experimental study is explained and the results of the study are given through interpretation of the tables. In conclusion part, the summary, findings and suggestions are presented.
