R POLLUTION ORIGANE FROM SHIPS and PIERS IN THE KOCAELİ DISTRICT Keywords : Environment, Sea, Bilge Water, Ballast Water Abstract :The Marmara area is an industrialized area. In this area the Marmara Sea is a particularly used international waterway. The yearly tonnage of trading vessels passing the Turkish straits is much above that of the world trading vessels. You can see how the Marmara sea is polluting. The reason for this is the industrializing, sea traffic, sewers, rivers carrying pollutants. In this work, all kind of research regarding the İzmit bay and control of the vessels and piers of the Kocaeli district, concerning the sea pollution are described. For this work samples of bilge and ballast water have been taken from different ships, and IR spectra from the samples taken with the SPECTRAFILE-IR Plus system as also spectra from samples of the purification plant for bilge and ballast water of the Kocaeli district have been analyzed. To reduce the sea pollution, the Kocaeli Environmental Agency has given the appropriate fine and observed the effect. It has been found, that the illegal discharge of bilge and ballast water will be very dangerous for the İzmit gulf. It has been seen, that there İs a need for a purification plant for bilge and ballast water. It has been searched in literature about the pollution of the Kocaeli district in special and general.
