T In this study the use of Colour Doppler Ultrasound (CDU) was tested for measurement of tendon velocity. Although many imaging modalities are available for the examination of the musculoskeletal system the quantitative measurements like the velocity of tendon excursion are not possible. The Flexor Pollicis Longus (FPL) was chosen for the experiments. The FPL muscle of 16 healthy volunteers was measured bilaterally at two levels (distal lower arm and metacarpal I). A splint from the fingers along the proximal lower arm was applied. The thumb was fixed to the splint from first phalanx to allow only flexion of the interphalangial joint (IP). A pulsed CDU was used for the measurements. The measurements were repeated three times at every step. The maximum and mean velocities of FPL tendon were measured at spectrum display mode during the continuous voluntary contraction. Ten sequential Doppler peaks (cm/sec) were recorded at every trial. The statistics were applied between levels on the same side and the opposite side. No significant differences were found between two levels of the same hand and the opposite hand. The individual tendon velocity variations were observed in the data as expected. Based on the statistical data, it can be interpreted that the measurements are reproducible. Conclusion: velocity measurements can be used in the future for the assessment of the muscles effected by various disorders. 60en_US
