Y This study was carried out at the experimental glasshouse of the Department of Horticulture at Ege University, Faculty of Agriculture in 1995. It was conducted as two separete trials for aubergine (ev. Halep Karası) and pepper (ev. Çarliston). Seeds were provided from Altın Seed Company in İzmir. Seedling were raised (a)directly sowing and/or (^trans planting. The 3 composts used as growing media were as follows: (1) 2:2:1 Sheep manure-soil-sand (standart compost) (2) 1:1 peat-perlite (3) peat 1400 g triplesuperphosphate (0-44-0), 800 g potassium sulphate (0-0-59), 1200 g ammonium nitrate (26-0-0) and 1000 g magnesium sulphate (10 % Mg) were added per mJ onto second and third composts. Seedlings were raised at three different pots: (1) Multipot (2) Transparent PE (12X15 cm) (3) Black PE (12X15 cm) The experimental design was `split plot` with 3 replicates and each trial had 310 seedlings. Stem thickness, stem length, leaf number, root length, fresh and dry weights of stems and roots were measured at 10 days intervals (on 1st, 10th and 20th of March) in order to determine seedling quality. The results of the experiment showed that transplanting was not necessary in pepper and aubergine seedling growing and standart compost which is used very common by the growers is not suitable and PE pots gave the best results.
