İngilizce bir esmâ-i hüsnâ manzumesi: Edwin Arnold, pearls of the Faith (inancın incileri)

Abstract

Cenab-ı Hakk'ın Kur'ân-ı Kerîm ve hadîs-i şerîflerde yer alan doksan dokuz ismine Esmâü'l-Hüsnâ / Esmâ-i Hüsnâ denir. Edebiyatımızda bu isimlerin anlamını, bu isimlerle yapılan duaların faziletini, her ismin tespih sayısı ile kazandıracağı özel tesiri konu edinen pek çok manzum ve mensur eser mevcuttur. 1832-1904 yılları arasında yaşamış İngiliz gazeteci, yazar ve şair Sir Edwin Arnold'un The Pearls of the Faith adlı kitabı da Esmâ-i Hüsnâ konusundadır. Edwin Arnold, görevle gittiği Hindistan'da yedi yıl kalmış (1856-1861), İngiltere'ye döndükten sonra orada topladığı malzemeyi çeşitli eserler halinde kaleme almıştır. Doğunun inanç ve felsefesini manzum bir üçleme ile yayımlamayı planlayan Arnold'un bu serideki en meşhur kitabı Buda'nın hayatı ve öğretilerine dair The Light of Asia (Asya'nın Işığı, 1879), diğer kitabı da Hinduizm'i anlatan Indian Song of Songs(Şarkıların Hintçe Şarkısı, 1875)dur. Bu üçlemenin İslam dinini tanıtan son halkası ise Pearls of theFaith or Islam's Rosary (İnancın İncileri veya İslâm'ın Gül Bahçesi, 1983) adlı eserdir.Arnold, bu kitapta Cenab-ı Allah'ın doksan dokuz ismini sırayla verirken her ismi önce bir beyitle açıklar, sonra da o isimle bağlantılı bir hikâye veya Kur'ân-ı Kerîm ayetlerine yer verir. Eserde yer alan hikâyeler Mevlânâ'nın Mesnevî'si başta olmak üzere Türk kültür ve edebiyatında yaygın olarak ele alınmış türdendir.Tezimizin amacı Edwin Arnold'un sözü edilen manzum kitabını İngilizceden Türkçeye tercüme ederek şairin her bir isimde ele aldığı hikâye ve konuların Esmâ-i Hüsnâ ilgisi ve kaynakları itibariyle değerlendirmektedir.

Ninety-nine beautiful names of Allah covered in Quran and mentioned in hadiths are called 'esmâ-i husnâ'. There are several works existing in our literature about the meanings of these names and special effects of each when repeated in certain numbers. The book of Sir Edwin Arnold who is a 19th century English poet, teacher and journalist; called The Pearls of Faith is about esmâ-i husnâ. He lived in India as a principal of a college for seven years. Arnold made use of his time in India, gathering inspiration for his future literary works. The literary task which he set before him was the interpretation in English verse of the life and philosopy of the East. His chief work with this object is The Light of Asia (1879) It is an Indian epic, dealing with the life and teaching of Buddha. Arnold's other principal volume of poetry is Indian Song of Songs (1875) about Hinduizm.The third part of his work is about Islam, the book name is Pearls of Faith (Islam's Rosary) (1883). Arnold explains each name first rows explaining the divine name with a verse; then the poem, putting a relation of the name with an Islamic source of story such as Mesnevi of Rûmî or a verse from Quran.In our paper; aim is to introduce this book; focusing on the relation between the name and the story or verse included within poems through finding the source of story and/or verse.
