dc.description.abstractABSTRACT This thesis is basically concerned with the teaching of a foreign language communicatively in elementary schools. Chapter I introduces the importance of learning another language and of starting it as early as possible. Chapter II defines the terms used often in this study: the Communicative Approach and communicative activities. Chapter III looks at the demand for an early start from psychological, neurological, and educational aspects. Chapter IV etates the general historical perspective of teaching foreign languages in primary schools in some European countries and in Turkey. Chapter V outlines how a foreign language and its skills should be taught in elementary classes, and the advantages of some teaching techniques. Chapter VI describes the application of the Communicative Approach in two elementary classes, and analyzes the data gathered from the research. Chapter VII states the conclusion and the suggestions of the study.en_US
