T The aim of this thesis is to analyze and investigate the content correspondence between the achievement test and the syllabus items used at YÂDIM. The main focus is on the content match of the first achievement test and the course book of Level 1, that students followed at YÂDIM in the 1993-1994 academic year. The sources of the data was the first achievement test of Level 1 and the course book `The New Cambridge English Course Student Book 1` together with its practice book. In order to obtain a representative sample of content of `The New Cambridge English Course Student Book`, every item in units 1 through 24 was analyzed as there were 24 units in the course book. Items are defined as any activity or exercise requiring a student to respond. Thereafter, all items in lessons 1 through 24 in the practice book, and items in the first achievement test of Level 1 were also analyzed. In addition to the data described above, item analysis of 200 randomly selected exam papers of the first achievement test of Level 1 was used to focus on the content of the test and items which contained problems or ambiguities in their construction. The first chapter offers background to the study, statement of the problem, aim and scope of the study, hypothesis and definition of terms related to the study. In the second chapter a review of literature of some studies on tests of achievement, and content match of syllabus and achievement tests is given. The third chapter gives information about the methodology applied in this research. In chapter four, the results of the item analysis of the achievement test are presented and discussed. The analysis results of the syllabus and the course book items are also presented in this chapter. In the fifth chapter conclusions are drawn and limitations and suggestions for further research are stated.en_US
