Y The use of ceramo-metal ceramic crown and bridge work is increasing yearly and in the light of clinical experience, the demand for alloys of higher strength and low cast is natural. Ceramo-metal restorations combine the beauty of porcelain and the strength of a metal substructure. The success of ceramo-metal restorations depend upon the adherence of porcelain to the ceramic alloy. Four theories of enamel adherence are mechanical, Van der Waals, chemical bonding and compressive bonding forces. Even though nonprecious alloys have superior mechanical properties, there appears to be an investigative controversy about the bond strength of nonprecious alloy systems. It has been shown that the separation of the porcelain from the metal, and the breakage between the opaque and the body porcelain were the most effective factors in the clinical success of the ceramo-metal restorations. The objective of this study is to determine the bond strength of vita porcelain with seven different non-precious alloys. In this study, seven commonly used base metal alloys were selected. A Vita VMK-68 porcelain was used for the study. Each porcelain alloys was prepared in a similar manner before porcelain application to the manufacturer's instructions. A total of 84 samples of the ceramo-metal bond was evaluated by the Shell-Nielsen test method. An instron testing machine was used to load each sample in tension until failure occured. The bond strengths were compared by statistical analysis and post-tested samples were evaluated visually and microscopically with the polarized light microscope. The results demonstrated a wide range of bond strengths. Values as low as 80.79 N/mm2 were recorded for BONDI-LOY, where as values as high as 96.70 N/mm2 were recorded for WIRON88. An analysis of variance was performed and demonstrated that there was a significant difference in bond strength among the seven alloys tested. Each metal displayed considerable variation in bond strength. Collectively, the base metal alloys evaluated displayed a disturbing tendency for adhesive failure through the porcelain-metal interface. Polarized light micrographs upon magnification at 1 0OOx, alloy BONDI-LOY exhibited a less degree of porcelain particles infrequently noted on the surface. By contrast, alloy WIRON88, presented numerous minute porcelain particles, scattered throughout the surface. Dentists have the responsability for selection of alloys used for cast restorations. This responsability should not be delegated to the dental laboratory technician, it is advisable to discuss the criteria for selection of an alloy with the technician.en_US
