A study on the earthquake risks associated with the automotive industry in the Marmara region

Abstract

ÖZET MARMARA BÖLGESİNDEKİ OTOMOTİV SEKTÖRÜYLE İLGİLİ DEPREM RİSKLERİNE İLİŞKİN BİR ÇALIŞMA Bu Tez çalışması Marmara Bölgesinde faaliyet gösteren otomotiv üretim tesislerinin deprem hasargörebilirliklerini değerlendirmek amacıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Çalışmanın başlangıcında otomotiv sektörünün Türkiye'deki yeri ve Marmara Bölgesi 'nin deprem tehlikesi anlatılmıştır. Marmara Bölgesindeki otomotiv sektörünün Türkiye ekonomisindeki yeri Otomotiv Sanayi Derneğinin kayıtlarına dayanılarak açıklanmaya çalışılmıştır. Marmara Bölgesinde bulunan otomotiv üretim tesislerinin karşı karşıya bulunduğu probablisitik ve deterministik depreme tehlike parametreleri ortaya konmuştur. Marmara Bölgesi 1999 yılında Kocaeli depremini yaşamışta. Tesislerdeki hasarlar geçmişte yapılan keşif gezi raporları, tesislerin kendi arşivleri ve depremi tesislerde yaşamış personelle yapılan göüşmelere dayanılarak araştırılmıştır. Bu çalışmada yer alan deprem hasargörebilirliklerine ilişkin çalışmalar fabrika ziyaretlerine dayanmaktadır. Otomotiv Sanayi Derneği nin yardımlarıyla, Marmara Bölgesinde faaliyet gösteren 1 1 otomotiv üretim tesisi gezilmiştir. Bu ziyaretler esnasında yapısal, yapısal olmayan ve yardımcı birimleri araştırmak için hazırlanan anket formları kullanıldı. Ziyaretler sonrasında, inşaat firmaları ve sigorta çalışanları ile 1999 depremi sonrası güçlendirme detayları ve hasar ihbarlarıyla ilgili görüşüldü. Öte yandan, reasürans, risk yönetimi, robot ve makina üretilcileri ile otomotiv endüstrisinin deprem riski ve özel makinelerin zayıflıkları konularında görüşüldü. Bu tez çalışmasında bulunan bütün gözlem sonuçlan ve verilerin birleşimi, mevcut otomotiv üretim tesislerine eklenecek yapıların inşaasını ve makine montajlarını gerçekleştirecek olan inşaat mühendislerine, deprem dolayısıyla gelecekte yaşanacak hasarlarının azaltılmasını hedefleyen tesis yöneticilerine ve bu veya benzer tesislerin deprem risklerini değerlendirmeye çalışacak sigorta veya reasürans şirketleri uzmanlarına yol gösterici niteliktedir.

IV ABSTRACT A STUDY ON THE EARTHQUAKE RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY IN THE MARMARA REGION This study is carried out to evaluate the earthquake vulnerability of the automotive facilities located in the Marmara Region. The importance of the automotive industry in Turkey and role of the Marmara Region in the earthquake hazard was discussed. The part of the automotive industry in the Marmara Region in the Turkish Economy is explained on the basis of statistics about the unit production and export data. The earthquake exposure of the automotive manufacturing plants in the Marmara Region was studied on the basis of probabilistic and deterministic approaches. The Marmara Region was suffered a significant earthquake in 1999. Earthquake damages in the facilities were researched from the past reconnaissance reports, facility archives and interviews with the employees. With the support of Automotive Industry Association, eleven automotive manufacturing facilities located in the Marmara Region were visited. During these visits, questionnaire forms prepared to investigate the structural properties, non-structural equipment details and auxiliary units (power, supplier, etc.) were used. After the site investigations, meetings were held by the constructor firms and insurance professionals to realize the retrofitting designs for the damaged facilities and the loss claims after the 1999 earthquake, respectively. On the other hand, earthquake hazard in automotive industry and the vulnerability of some specific machinery issues were interviewed with the reinsurance & risk management firms and machinery & robot manufacturing firms located in all over the world, by mails and phone calls. Composition of all these observations and data that found in this thesis study will be a guide for the civil engineers who will design additional structures or will erect machinery and equipments to the current automotive manufacturing plants, for the farsighted facility authorities who want to reduce the future damages due to earthquakes and the risk professionals of insurance or reinsurance firms who assess the earthquake risk of these or similar facilities.
