A Study on the core characteristics of collectivism: A comparison between local Turkish and immigrant Bulgarian-Turkish teachers

Abstract

ÖZET Bu çalışma, `bireyci lik-toplulukçuluk` boyutunun temel bireysel içeriğinin `bağlı lık-bagımsızlık` kavramı açısından ele alınmasına yönelik, tanımlayıcı bir araştırmadır. Toplulukçulugun farklı yönleri, `normatif` içerikten arındırılarak düzenlenmiş ölçekler kullanılarak incelendi. Araştırma, benzer tarihsel ve kültürel kaynakları paylasan iki toplulukçu örneklem grubu üzerinde gerçekleştirildi. 183 Türk ve 181 Bulgaristan göçmeni Türk kökenli öğretmenden oluşan bu iki ayrı örneklem grubu kişisel tanımlamalar, duygusal ve maddi destek verme ve alma eğilimleri, aile tipi tercihleri ve değer yapıları açısından karşılaştırıldılar. Amaç, bu grupların toplulukçu yaklaşımları arasındaki farklılıkları görmek ve bu tür bir sonucun bağlılık kavramıyla olası kavramsal bağlantılarını araştırmaktı. Sonuçlar göçmen öğretmenlerin ilişkisel benlik, geniş bir aile tercihi, toplulukçu değer yapısı ve toplumsal çevreyle duygusal destek alışverişi gibi özelliklerle biçimlenmiş bir toplulukçu yaklaşıma sahip olduklarını gösterdi, öte yandan, Türk öğretmenler, maddi değişimi öne çıkaran ve geleneksel toplulukçu değerleri göreceli olarak daha az vurgulayan çekirdek aile merkezli bir toplulukçuk biçimi göstererek göçmen öğretmenlerden farklılastılar. ABSTRACT The present study was a descriptive one and it focused on core personal aspects of individualism-collectivism, in terms of the culture of relatedness-separateness. Using measures which have been designed to be `norm-free,` different aspects of collectivism were examined. This study was conducted on samples from two collectivist cultures which share similar historical and cultural origins. A sample of local Turkish teachers (N=183) was compared with a sample of immigrant Bulgarian-Turkish teachers (N=181) on their self descriptions, tendencies to give and to receive emotional and material support, family preferences, and their value structures. The aim of this study was to see the differences in the collectivisms of these samples, and to search for the possible conceptual relations of such a result with the concept of relatedness. The results showed that immigrant Bulgarian-Turkish teachers had a collectivistic orientation characterized by relational self, wider family preferences, collectivistic outlook in values, and tendency to give and receive emotional support from social context. On the other hand, local Turkish teachers differed from immigrant teachers by showing nuclear family centered collectivism in the form of high preference for material interdependences and relatively less emphasis on traditional collectivistic values. The findings were evaluated and discussed in term of the concept of relatedness- separateness. VI
